LENT, DAY 7: FAITH THAT AMAZES JESUS
FAST FROM: Trying to Control Everything
“When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, ‘Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.’”
— Matthew 8:10 (NIV)
So often we pride ourselves on being strong, pay bills on time, show up for others, handle our responsibilities. When problems come, we work harder. When pressure increased, we put our heads down, stay quiet and push through. For many, asking for help is not our habit.
So when a child becomes sick and the doctors have no clear answers, we feel helpless. We pray—but may also worry. We believe—but we also try to control every outcome. Til we find ourselves at a place for the first time in a long time, where we have to admit that we need more… we need help… we need a Savior.
In today’s Scripture, a Roman centurion approached Jesus with a similar burden. He is a man of authority. He gives orders and expects results. He is used to being in control. Yet when his servant is suffering, he humbles himself.
He does not demand a miracle. He does not insist Jesus come to his house. He simply says, “Just say the word, and my servant will be healed. That kind of faith amazes Jesus. It is faith that releases control. Faith that trusts God’s power without needing proof. Faith that believes God can work from a distance.
So many of us carry heavy responsibilities. We lead households. We care for parents. We raise children. We hold down jobs. We serve in ministry. We are used to being strong. But this passage reminds us that strong faith is not about doing everything ourselves. It is about trusting God to do what only He can do.
Faith grows when we stop trying to manage everything and start believing that God is enough.
