LENT, DAY 8: PEACE IN THE STORM

FAST FROM: Panicking Before You Pray

“Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake… But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, ‘Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!’”
— Matthew 8:23–25 (NIV)

Have you ever gotten a phone call or text message with unexpected news? One message. One call. One situation that just caught you completely off guard. Within minutes your mind may begi racing ahead of reality. What if? How will I? Why now?

Storms don’t always start with thunder, lightening, or rain. Sometimes storms begin with a thought.

In today’s passage we see that. The disciples were experienced fishermen that knew water and that knew weather. But this storm they found themselves in overwhelmed even them. And while they panicked, Jesus slept.

Not because He didn’t care.
But because He wasn’t afraid.

Sometimes our anxiety grows not because God is absent, but because we forget that He is with us. The storm did not surprise Jesus. It revealed the disciples’ fear.

If you’re in the middle of a storm, before you assume you are sinking, remember who sails with you. Faith does not deny storms. It trusts the Savior inside them.

Reflection Questions

  1. What storm are you facing right now?

  2. How can you pause and pray before reacting?
