LENT, DAY FOUR: THE KINGDOM HAS COME NEAR

FAST FROM: Drifting Instead of Living on Purpose
“When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee. Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali— to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah: “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.” From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” Matthew 4:12–17
Capernaum was not a random choice. Capernaum was intentional. After John was imprisoned and Jesus returned to Galilee, He did not settle back into the comfort of His hometown. He passed by Nazareth. Instead, He made His home in Capernaum–a busy, diverse, traveling community near the Sea of Galilee.
People were always coming and going from Houston—I mean Capernaum. :-)
Merchants passing through. Fisherman fishing nearby. Pilgrims traveling toward Jerusalem. Outsiders and locals crossed paths every day. It was noisy. It was crowded. It was unpredictable. It was exactly where Jesus chose to plant Himself for the assignment ahead. Capernaum gave Jesus an opportunity to reach Jews and Gentiles, church folks and unchurched, housed and unhoused, residents and immigrants. Capernaum was central, connected, and open… it was the perfect pulpit.
Sometimes we assume God will use us most in places that feel familiar and comfortable. But, Jesus shows us that Kingdom impact often (but not always) requires strategic positioning and deliberate movements. In choosing this strategic location to live, Jesus’ ministry was ripe. In his preaching and teaching, He fulfilled the prophecy: “The people living in darkness have seen a great light.”
Light was breaking in! The same is true today.
God often positions us in workplaces, neighborhoods, schools, churches, and communities with purpose and intentionality. Not by accident, but by assignment. That job you didn’t plan for. That season you didn’t expect. That environment that stretches you.
THIS may be your Capernaum. THIS may be your pulpit.
THIS may be where God wants His light to shine through you.
THROUGH YOU may be how the Kingdom has come near.
Reflection Questions
Where has God positioned you right now–in your work, family, or community?
How might God be calling you to see your environment as a mission field?
Kingdom Marker: Kingdom impact grows when we choose purpose over comfort.
Daily Affirmations
God has positioned me for purpose.
I carry light wherever I go.
My life is a tool for Kingdom Impact.
“Lord, may the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in Your sight. The clothes I wear, the places I live, the conversations I have, the work I do… let it all be an instrument to be used for Your glory. Use me to bring your Kingdom near. Amen.”
